Cheti Chand is observed as New Year’s Day by the Sindhi community. It is celebrated on the second day of Chaitra Shulka Paksha, and is known as Chaitra Chand, as it is the day the moon is sighted and will fall on 19th March in 2018.
This is the day Ishtadeva Uderolal is believed to have been born. Ishtadeva Uderola, also known as Jhulelal / Lal Sain is the patron saint of the Sindhi community. He is believed to have saved the community from religious persecution. The festival is celebrated by devotees by making an offering of Baharana Sahib into a river, lake or similar water body, as Jhulela is also considered an Avatar of Varuna Devata. The Baharana Sahib consists of a Jyot (oil lamp), Misiri (crystal sugar), Fota (cardamom), Fal (fruits), clove, Akho (a sweet dish), phool (flowers), patta (leaves), Kalash with a coconut in it covered with a cloth, and an idol of Jhulelal.
Jhulela is revered by Sindhi Muslims as Sheikh Tahir and worshipped at Odera Lal in Sindh Province which is now located in Pakistan.
