Mahavir Jayanti or Mahaveer Janma Kalyanak is observed by as birth anniversary of Lord Mahavira, the twenty fourth and last Tirthankara of the Avasarpini phase of the cycle of time. It is celebrated by Jains on the 13th day of the Shukla Paksha (waxing moon) of the Chaitra month, which will fall on 29th March in 2018.
Mahavir Swami was born in a royal Kshatriya family belonging to the Kashyapa Gothra of the Suryavanshi Ikshvaku dynasty. His father was King Siddhartha and mother Queen Trishala. It is believed that Mahavir Swami was born in 582 or 599 B.C at Kundagrama near Vaishali in Bihar.
According to popular belief, Mahavir Swami abandoned all luxuries of life at the age of thirty and undertook penance to achieve Keval Jnana under a Sala tree at the age of forty three. It is also believed that he attainted Nirvana at the age of seventy two at Pawapuri in Bihar.
