Rang Panchami is celebrated on the Panchami (fifth day) of the Krushna Paksh (waning moon) in the month of Phalguna which will be observed on 6th March in 2018. It is celebrated mainly in rural places in Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh, by throwing coloured water and fragrant red powder known as gulal. This is similar to the throwing of colours during Holi, which happens around five days prior to Rang Panchami.
It is also known as Shimgo or Shimga in Maharashtra and is celebrated by the Palkhi dance. Most fishing communities in Maharashtra celebrate this festival.
During Holi, a bonfire is made in which Holika is symbolically burnt. This is believed to clear the atmosphere of all Rajasic and tamasic particles, and it is believed that five days later, on Ranga Panchami the Satwik essence fills the air. This is known to activate the Panch Tattva or five elements that make up the universe.
