Today, 21st April, 2018, is Ramanuja Jayanti, the birthday of Sri Ramanujacharya, one of the most important proponents of Sri Vaishnavism. It is observed on the day of the Thiruvathirai Nakshatra during the month of Chaitra, and follows the Tamil calendar. It is believed that Sri Ramanujacharya was born in 1017 A.D in Sriperumbudur, as Ilaya Perumal, to mother Kanthimathi and father Asuri Kesava Somayaji. Sri Vaishnava tradition attributes the authorship of nine Sanskrit texts to him namely Vedarthasangraha, Sri Bhashya, Bhagavad Gita Bhashya, Vedantapida, Vedantasara, Gadya Trayam (which is a compilation of three texts called the Saranagati Gadyam, Sriranga Gadyam and the Srivaikunta Gadyam), and Nitya Grantham. Sri Ramanujacharya’s sole aim in life was guiding mankind to achieve God, through the right path, and his teachings form the basis of the philosophy of Vishishta Advaita.
