The birth of Lord Krishna is celebrated as Krishnashtami, Janmashtami or Gokulashtami. It is celebrated on the eight day of the waning moon (Krishna Paksha) of Shravan / Bhadrapada month and will be celebrated on 2nd and 3rd September, 2018. Lord Krishna, the eighth avatara of Lord Mahavishnu, is believed to have been born on this day to Devaki, the sister of King Kamsa of Mathura. His father was Vasudeva of the Yadava clan. King Kamsa was foretold that the eight child of Devaki would be the cause of his death. To be safe, King Kamsa, imprisoned Vasudeva and Devaki and killed every child born to them in prison. However after he killed the seventh child, divine intervention ensured that the eight child was born at midnight. All the prison guards were asleep, and the prison gates opened, enabling Vasudeva to escape and ensure the safety of baby Krishna. The river Yamuna, which was in spate, parted and opened a way for him to cross the river and reach Gokula, thereby ensuring the safety of Lord Balakrishna in the home of his foster parents, Nanda and Yashoda.
